The Quiz match tool is a quizmaster's console. You read and rule. The app keeps every score, counts time-outs and appeals, and handles rereads and substitutes.
Set up the match
- Open the Quiz match tab.
- Name the match. Optionally rename the Green and Red teams.
- For each seat, 1 to 4, pick a kid from your program. For a visitor, leave it on Empty / guest and type a name. Each team needs at least one quizzer.
- Under Questions in play, set From and To to match your meet's scope. Leave 1 to 576 for all questions.
- Tap Generate set and start.
The set follows the match rules: ten 10s, seven 20s, and three 30s; at least three 20s and one 30 in each half; no 30 first, last, or back to back; no repeats. It also has spare questions and overtime questions.
If you stay on the setup page after tapping the button, check that each team has a quizzer, and widen the question range. A very small range can't make a legal set.
Run each question
- Tap Open the match. The Say box gives you the words to read.
- Tap Ask question. Read the opening remarks shown, like "Question. Question number 5, for 20 points."
- Tap Start reading the question, then read it. The underline shows the interrupt point. A buzz before you start reading is an opening-remarks foul.
- When a quizzer buzzes, tap their seat. The seats are laid out like a quiz table: Green 4 3 2 1, then Red 1 2 3 4. A 30-second answer clock starts, and the answer key appears.
- Tap Correct or Incorrect.
- When you finish reading, tap Finished reading. A 5-second clock starts. If nobody buzzes, tap No response.
To have the device read the questions for you, check Read aloud at the top. It then knows when the reading ends on its own.
Scoring, done for you
- A correct answer earns the question's full value. A miss loses half.
- Quiz-out: 6 correct answers earns a 10-point bonus.
- Strike-out: 3 misses.
- Fouls cost 5 points each. 3 fouls is a foul-out.
- A quizzer who quizzes out, strikes out, or fouls out leaves the table. Fill the seat with Substitute quizzer.
Each seat shows the quizzer's points, rights, misses, and fouls.
Rereads and substitute questions
- Rereads. When a quizzer interrupts and misses, the question is read again to the other team only. The app shows "Reread to Red only," and only that team's seats can buzz.
- Void question. Tap it for a misread or for help or hindrance. The app pulls a substitute question of the same value from the spares. Or pick Substitute to Green only (or Red) when only one team should get it.
Fouls
- Tap Foul.
- Pick the foul from the list: quizzer fouls or team fouls.
- Tap the quizzer's seat, or the team for a team foul.
Assess a foul on the quizzer who's answering only after you rule on their answer. Answered out of turn stops the current answer and sends the question on by the rules.
Time-outs and appeals
- Time-outs. Each team has 3, plus 1 in overtime. Tap Time-out for the team between questions. Change active quizzers during a time-out with Substitute quizzer.
- Coach's appeals. Each team has 2. Use them after a ruling and before the next question (and not after a time-out). Tap Coach's appeal, then upheld or denied for the team. An upheld appeal reverses the ruling, and the scores update.
The scoreboard counts down what each team has left.
Undo
Tap Undo to take back the last thing you did: a ruling, a buzz, a foul, anything. Tap it again to go back further. Scores recalculate every time.
Close the match
- After question 20, the Say box reads "Are there any Points of Order or Coach's Appeals?"
- Tap Close.
- If the score is tied, the match goes to overtime: three questions, one of each value, then single 20-point questions until the tie breaks.
- When it ends, the app shows the winner and the closing script to read: second-high scorer, high scorer, every other score, then the final team scores.
The app also lists the interrupted questions, which get circled on a paper scoresheet.
After the match
- Each kid's answers count toward their cards and progress. Guests don't have progress.
- Kids who quizzed out get your program's Quiz-out points automatically. See Points and the prize store.
- The match saves as you go. The top shows Saved. If it says Not saved, check your connection.
- Recent matches on the Quiz match tab lets you reopen a match in progress or look at a final.
